01/06/2011 – We Are The Ocean (Dan Brown) – english
Enjoy The Show: How does it feel traveling pretty much all around the world playing everyday in a different place?
Dan Brown: Its amazing. Its weird that we feel so at home we’re on tour because we’re always so far from where we actually live, but we have so much fun seeing all those amazing places and travelling around that it just feels so natural and comfortable. Touring is such an integral part of being in a band, you’ve got to be prepared for long journeys and sometimes days without showering!
ETS: The name of this second record is GO NOW AND LIVE, is it like your motto?
D.B: I guess so yes, we wanted a really positive and bold message that will inspire people to never give up and always aspire to bring out the good in everything. Hopefully we captured that nicely with ‘Go Now And Live’
ETS: Writing your debut album had to be pretty hard, I guess. Nevertheless, writing this second record hasn’t been easier. Am I right?
D.B: In some respect, writing the 2nd album is even harder because you’re always worried that people are going to compare it to the debut and so there’s always that fear that it won’t be as good and people will write the band off. We tried not to let it get in the way though, i think if you concentrate too much on things like that then it definitely effects the outcome of the music and the way you write.
ETS: This record is pretty different from your previous works, was it made on purpose or it just happened that way?
D.B: A bit of both really. We just started writing in the studio and things were coming together really naturally and although it was a lot different to our previous material, we were all really into it and were confident that people would understand that bands don’t just want to write the same album over and over. They naturally grow as musicians and as people and we just wanted to challenge ourselves i guess and try to create something different.
ETS: Why did you choose Pete Miles to record it? How was working with him?
D.B: We’ve been a fan of Pete’s work for some time so we contacted him to see if he would be into the idea of doing the album and he was. We met up with him a few months before we entered the studio and he came to see us play, so he could understand the dynamics of the band and see what we’re really about.
It was amazing to work with him on this album. His studio had a very relaxed atmosphere and everyone was really chilled and on the same wavelength.
ETS: GO NOW AND LIVE was released only 4 weeks ago. You’ve already done a UK headline tour and practically the day after the last day of that tour you joined FFAF’s European tour, is 2011 going to be this busy for you all the time?
D.B: Thats definitely the plan, yes! We want to be touring worldwide and getting the new material out to as many people that will to it as possible. We’re back in the UK now, for festival season, and then we tour Australia in October, then hopefully the States straight after that, and then back out in the UK and Europe in November!
ETS: For you, long tours are more of exciting or exhausting?
D.B: Very exciting. I love the idea of being out on the road for weeks at a time and performing in new places. Sometimes you can feel quite drained during a tour and maybe a little homesick but thats to be expected. It never gets to the point where we actually want to pack up and go home.
ETS: You’ve been compared to Alexisonfire and Nickelback before, what do you have to say about it?
D.B: They’re 2 very successful bands and we could share the same level of success as either of them, we will be very happy indeed!
ETS: You will be playing Slam Dunk Festival and it’s going to be your 4th year in a row. How do you feel about that?
D.B: Slam Dunk was last weekend, it was incredible! We always have so much fun at that festival and its a great honour to be invited back for thed 4th year running. No other band has played it as many times as us!
ETS: Runaway is going to be the next single, right? Can you tell us why?
D.B: Yes it is, we shot a video for it a few days ago which will be coming out very soon. Its probably my favourite song on the album, as it is for the others so we figured it would be a great single. Its quite a powerful song lyrically too, i think a lot of people will relate to it.
ETS: If you could swap roles with any of your band mates, who would you like to swap it with and why?
D.B: I’d probably say Tom. I used to play drums when i was growing up and i don’t get to play as regularly anymore so it’d be awesome to get back behind a kit and play all our songs!
ETS: Some weeks ago you played in Barcelona and Madrid, how was it? Were these two shows what you expected?
D.B: Those 2 shows definitely exceeded any expectations that we had. It was our first time in Spain and we were completely blown away by the response we got. The crowd was great. Barcelona was probably my favourite show on that whole tour!
ETS: Anything else you would like to say to your spanish fans?…
D.B: Thank you for your support and your love for our band. We can’t wait to come back over and see you all again. Hopefully in November!
